All you need to know about 'Smart Cities' in India !

PM Modi had announced his vision to set up 100 smart cities across the country soon after his government was sworn into power mid last year. Since then a race has been on among cities to land on the list that the ministry of urban development is compiling. The 100 smart cities mission intends to promote adoption of smart solutions for efficient use of available assets, resources and infrastructure. Dipak Dash explains what these smart cities are and how they will work.

What is a 'smart city'?

A city equipped with basic infrastructure to give a decent quality of life, a clean and sustainable environment through application of some smart solutions.

Basic infrastructure

Assured water and electricity supply, sanitation and solid waste management, efficient urban mobility and public transport, robust IT connectivity, e-governance and citizen participation, safety and security of citizens.

Smart solutions

Public information, grievance redressal, electronic service delivery, citizens’ engagement, waste to energy & fuel, waste to compost, 100% treatment of waste water, smart meters & management, monitoring water quality, renewable source of energy, efficient energy and green building, smart parking, intelligent traffic management system.

What's the next step?

The next step is identification of the 100 cities and for this a city challenge competition to be conducted by Bloomberg Philanthropies is envisaged. The current plan looks to select 20 cities this year followed by 40 each in the next two years.

Smart Cities Council India has been formed

It is part of the US-based Smart Cities Council, which is a consortium of smart city practitioners and experts, with a 100-plus member and advisor organizations operating in over 140 countries.

All states will get at least one smart city

A Special Purpose Vehicle will be created for each city to implement Smart City action plan. The SPV will be signed with the urban local body, state government and the Centre for implementation of the project.

How it will work

After government announces the guidelines, states will be asked to nominate names of cities for a ‘City Challenge Competition’ and the chosen ones will get Central fund of Rs 100 crore each year for 5 years.

The basic criteria for selection of a city/municipal area

Area-based development

1. Retrofitting 500 acres: Planning in an existing built-up area in a municipal ward, preparing plan with citizen participation (example: Connaught Place in Delhi, Bhendi Bazar in Mumbai).

2. Greenfield 250 acres: Introduce smart solutions in a vacant area using innovative planning (example: land pooling/land reconstitution in Outer Delhi, GIFT city in Gujarat).

3. Redevelopment 50 acres: Replacement of existing built-up area and preparing a new layout plan with enhanced infrastructure by way of mixed land use (example: Kidwai Nagar in Delhi).

Application Procedure Part 6

 CLASSIC Cooling treatment on ROOF Area:-

To overcome HEAT problem steps involved in the treatment are-

    1.   Clean roof surface (surface has to be free from loose dust, oil, grease, bitumen & algae.)Clean the surface using Wire brush/ Nylon Brush/Scrapper & Water.

    2.   Wash the surface thoroughly with water using pressure pumps.

   3.   Apply 1 coat uniform layer of COOL GUARD Solution with brush/ Roller on substrate.

      4.   After duration of drying of 1-2 hrs apply 2^nd coat of COOL GUARD with brush/ Roller/ spray.

5.   After 3-4 hrs apply 1 coat of TRANSEAL.

6.   For full curing let the coating dry for 12 hrs.

Note: -Before application of every layer, the substrate should be clean & dust free.

Preparation of Cool Guard Solution on the site. 

·         Take 700 ml water in bucket.

·          Add powder of cool guard to the water along with stirring and make a viscous paste like emulsion.

·         Add more water up to 500 ml to the above viscous emulsion with regular stirring to make brushable emulsion.

·         Apply the coating on the clean substrate.

·         Prepared cool guard solution can be used till 2 hrs after mixing.

·         Prepared solutions should not be kept uncovered, when not in use.

Application Procedure For Ext Wall Coating:-

  To overcome HEAT problem steps involved in the treatment are-

1.   Clean the surface (surface has to be free from loose dust, oil, grease, bitumen, Corrosion & algae.) Clean the surface using Wire brush/ Nylon Brush/Scrapper & Water.

2.   Apply uniform layer of primer with brush/ Roller/ spray on substrate.

3.   After duration of drying of 4-5 hrs apply 2 coats of MX COOL WRAP PREMIUM with brush/ Roller/ spray in between duration of 4-5 hours.

4.   For full curing let the coating dry for 12 hrs.

Application Procedure Part 5

Rustop – RUSTOP is a blend of complex inorganic and organic rust removers and preventives, wetting agents along with water soluble resins etc in a suitable medium. The product converts existing rust on an iron, steel or any metal (copper, aluminum, brass or the like) surface to a film tightly bonded to the surface and which prevents further oxidation and subsequent formation of rust on the surfaces. The product is very much effective over a long period of time and the surface prepared by applying the product is readily available / suitable for applying paint coatings on the same.

 

Rust Coat is a Protective coating used in the industry to protect metal substrates from several adverse conditions including corrosion .It is having anti algae & anti moss effect also. All these properties of Rust Coat increases life of substrate.

Application Procedure:-

1. Clean the surface (surface has to be free from dust, oil Paints, grease & algae.)  

2. Apply uniform layer of Rustop with the help of cotton (Also apply where the joint is & overlapping is found)

3.  After that before dry, rub the surface with cotton and remove the rust.

4. After interval of 24 hrs – apply 2 coat of MX Rust Coat. (At 3-4 hrs intervals, depend upon atmosphere)

TIMBER KLEAN (TK)

TK is a water based milky clear solution acting as Tannin resistant and giving enormous dimension stability and waterproofing to the wood surface.

Components in TK react with the wood structure and makes absolute bonding giving the wood dimension stability.

It is highly recommended for furniture with white finish and wood that has to be painted with light colors for base preparation. TK is environment friendly and healthy for the labourers to work for.

Application Procedure :

1)      Prepare the surface with sanding with emery paper 220-320

2)      Make the surface smooth

3)      Flood spray the surface or do flooded application by cloth / brush by TK

4)      Let the substrate dry for 10-12 hours in normal season and 12-14 hours in humid season.

5)      DO NOT DO SANDING AFTER DRYING.

6)      Apply direct acrylic paint or distemper as required.

7)      Let the paint dry.

8)      Now do the sanding as per the requirement.

NOTE :

·         Flooded application required

·         Sanding is NOT to be done after TK application and drying

·         Sanding has to be done only after drying of distemper application.
